During an interview with IGN,
the 47-year-old Avenger discussed the possibility of a Hulk solo film…
and he seems rather keen to catapult the big, green rage machine into
space.
“I
think there’s a lot of places to go with [Hulk],” he said. “Well he’s
going to space. Yeah, I mean there’s some talk of maybe Planet Hulk.”
-
But before you get too excited, it seems that’s nowhere near official…
“Ruffalo
went on to say that he hadn’t been involved in active talks for the
project and it isn’t a part of Marvel’s announced slate,” IGN explained.
“So it’s unclear what - if any - stage of development it’s in.”
Of
course, there have been plenty of rumours of a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie,
ever since the Latino Review first reported it back in early 2013. But
was there really any truth to it? Although we haven’t heard anything
official since, it looks as though it’s something that Mark Ruffalo is
rather keen on… and that might just be enough to sway the studio bosses
at Marvel.
Except that Kevin Feige has already detailed why a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie is a bad idea.
Speaking
to IGN during the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ press junket, he firmly
stated that Marvel has no plans to go in that direction… and his reasons
for steering clear of the rather obscure comic book make a lot of
sense.
“If
we were ever able to do a standalone Hulk movie, 60 percent of the fun
would be seeing Mark Ruffalo leading a Marvel movie – and that’s what we
would do if we ever went down that road.”
Obviously,
it’s a rather compelling argument against making ‘Planet Hulk’. After
all, the big reason Mark Ruffalo is so excellent in the role is because
of his understated performances as Bruce Banner.
Taking
away the Hulk’s more human side would leave Ruffalo merely performing
motion capture for a largely CGI movie. And that doesn’t sound half as
fun as digging into Banner’s fractured psyche.
But Feige admits that it wouldn’t be all bad.
“I
think what’s cool about the Planet Hulk story is it’s all Hulk,” he
said. “He’s a gladiator, he’s fighting all these creatures on another
world. Yes, some of those creatures show up in [Guardians of the
Galaxy], which makes people think, ‘Oh, maybe it could exist.’ And maybe
it could exist, someday. I don’t think that’s the first place we would
go, though.”
